Even though they were often crudely drawn, these old pirate maps provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of the pirates. They were also filled with all sorts of coded symbols that the pirates used to map out their treasure-hunting grounds. These larger maps were often decorated with illustrations of the coastline, as well as pictures of the pirate captain and his crew. However, some of the more elaborate maps were much larger, sometimes measuring up to four feet across. This is because they were meant to be folded up and carried in the pocket of the pirate captain. Most of the pirate maps that have been found are small, measuring only a few inches across. These maps were used to help the pirates navigate their way to hidden coves and secret islands where they could hide their treasure. In the age of pirates, map-makers were often commissioned by captains to create detailed maps of the areas where they planned to sail.
